Radical Together: Unleashing the People of God for the Purpose of God by David Platt (Multnomah Books, 2011)
David Platt’s latest volume addresses six essential areas where confusion may hinder individual churches from effectively developing and engaging the “people of God in the Spirit of God with the Word of God for the glory of God in the world.” Mission Frontiers readers will celebrate the clear call in Chapter five (“Our Unmistakable Task”) for discipling all nations.
Even more significant is chapter four, as it highlights the change of perspective which must occur for churches to shift from being “entertainment centers” to becoming “equipping centers.” This chapter, “The Genius of Wrong,” reflects the multiplication emphasis reported on this issue in “Church Planting Movements from One Indian Perspective.” MF also featured this kind of thinking in the Jan/Feb 2011 cover story on Real Life Ministries.
Encourage leaders in your church to read and discuss this fourth chapter, a portion of which is slated to appear in the Jul/Aug issue of MF.

Speaking of Jesus: The Art of Non-Evangelism by Carl Medearis (David C Cook, 2011)
Carl Medearis and his family lived in Beirut, Lebanon for 12 years where they encouraged university students, business professionals and political leaders to live their lives by the principles and teachings of Jesus in order to change their societies and nations.
On January 28th, 2010, Carl Medearis teamed up with former SC governor David Beasley and co-author Ted Dekker (New York Times best-selling author of more than twenty novels) to host a live discussion internet discussion of Islam entitled Why Do You Fear Me? The event promoted Medearis & Dekker’s book Tea with Hezbollah: Sitting at the Enemy’s Table (Doubleday, 2010). Medearis’s 2008 Muslims, Christians, and Jesus: Gaining Understanding and Building Relationships (DVD and study guide) has been picked up for re-release by Zondervan in September, 2011.

Reproducible Pastoral Training: Church Planting Guidelines from the Teachings of George Patterson by Patrick O’Connor (William Carey Library Publishers—a ministry of the USCWM, 2006)
George Patterson’s pioneering work in Honduras with Obedience Oriented Discipleship inspired lesson thirteen of the Perspectives course on “Spontaneous Multiplication of Churches.” Patrick O’Connor was mentored by Patterson in Los Angeles and then applied the same principles in Honduras himself. After long encouraging Patterson to detail his approach in a book, O’Connor finally wrote the book.

Prayerwalking: Praying On Site with Insight by Steve Hawthorne and Graham Kendrick (Charisma House, 1996)
Steve Hawthorne, editor of the Perspectives course, has also an advocate of “prayerwalking” for well over a decade. His Waymakers ministry describes prayerwalking this way:
Many Christians have been learning to quietly pray in the places that they live, work or play. We’ve come to call this sort of on-site intercession “prayerwalking.”
Prayerwalking is simply praying in the very places we expect God to bring forth his answers. Prayerwalking is usually a low-profile affair: Friends or family stroll two-by-two through their own neighborhoods, schools and work places, praying as they go. Once in a while the prayers can be demonstrative, but most prayerwalking is fairly quiet. It’s usually being on the scene without making one.

Today, Muslims are learning the camel’s secret and discovering in Jesus Christ the Name above all names. An Introduction To The Old Testament Template by Landa Cope (YWAM Publishing, 2011)
YWAM has just re-released this 2006 title, also available online, which explains
- Why our gospel message often has so little impact. (We have substituted the “gospel of salvation” for Jesus’ Gospel of the Kingdom.)
- How misreading the Exodus as just a spiritual analogy for deliverance from sin has blinded us to the principles God has recorded for the proper functioning of every facet of culture.

Real Life Discipleship by Jim Putman (NavPress, 2011)
Through more than a decade Jim Putman and his team have modeled an effective approach for making active disciplers rather than entertaining spectators. (In 2010 their members baptized 700 unbelievers in their small groups.) The insights in this book have been refined through the process of introducing hundreds of other churches to their model.

The Key to the Missionary Problem by Andrew Murray (1902), updated 1980 by Leona Choy (Christian Literature Crusade, 2007 Printing)
In 1902 Andrew Murray masterfully assessed the central problem facing the missionary endeavors of his day. His assessment is as relevant today as it was then.

Transforming Discipleship by Greg Ogden (IVPress, 2003)
Ogden analyzes the discipleship failure of the American church and then proposes a realistic model to start making disciples through reproducible threesomes. After going to print he observed that foursomes may work better than threesomes due to the frequency of travel in with which someone may be absent due to travel.
Ogden’s model has many strengths, but could be improved by intentional participation in ministry together (rather than simply studying concepts together), and overlapping reproduction to encourage coaching instead of waiting until one group ends for its participants to start their own groups. Still, he provides a solid background for such further refinements.

Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream by David Platt (Multnomah Books, 2010)

Radical also introduces a five point basic challenge to help God’s people escape our attraction to the American Dream. The whole Nov/Dec 2010 issue of MF: Going Radical focused on the mobilization significance of David Platt and this book. (See above for MF’s promotion of Platt’s latest book Radical Together.)

Follow: A Simple and Profound Call to Live Like Jesus by Floyd McClung (David C Cook, 2010)
Follow is a real-life guide to discipleship “the Jesus way.” McClung tells how he traded a life of religion for a life of relationship with Jesus—a relationship that led him to form communities of Christian disciples around the world. Taking the gospels at face value leads Floyd to define a radical strategy for discipling new believers while strengthening our own devotional lives. He details practical ideas for forming discipleship groups that reflect Jesus’ principles of accountability, transparency, humility, and outreach. Through it all, Floyd emphasizes the importance of following Jesus personally rather than adhering to ineffective rules or traditions. With stories and scriptural principles, Floyd McClung leads us through the liberating process of changing the focus of our lives from ourselves to Jesus so we can do life the way Jesus did—and experience a richer spiritual life than we’ve ever known.
