A Remarkable New Film on the Life of William Carey Celebrates His Landmark Role in Launching the Modern Missionary Movement

In the annals of Protestant missionary efforts, few luminaries shine more brightly than the humble English cobbler named William Carey. Given the tools and resources available to him, his accomplishments in India are no less than stunning.

William Carey is considered to be the father of the modern Protestant missionary movement because God used his book, An Enquiry into the Obligations of Christians, to wake up the Protestants to the need for frontier mission work. While his book mobilized thousands of Christians in England and North America, he began to win people to Christ in Bengal, India.

A new film on the life of William Carey might win many more people to Christ soon. This film, Candle in the Dark, produced by Christian history specialists Gateway Films, does an outstanding job of educating people about Carey's struggles and triumphs in India. Carey oversaw the translation of the Bible into 35 languages and was instrumental in the banishment of the Hindi practice of sati--the burning alive of a widow on her husband's funeral pyre. Carey also advanced Indian society in the areas of education and agriculture. For this and many other acts of service, Carey is greatly revered by the peoples of India.

There are 240 million television viewers in India. It is Gateway Films' dream to translate Candle in the Dark into the Hindi language and broadcast it all over India. Because the people of India love William Carey and because he has often been celebrated as a great friend to their nation, Indians will watch this film, see the Gospel message lived out in Carey's life, and feel its impact on their lives.

January 8, 2000, represents the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the Serampore mission which William Carey and his co-workers founded on the ideals of community living. It was here that many of Carey's greatest works were done, including the founding of Serampore College which still operates today.

The film, Candle in the Dark, is now available to churches as part of a beautifully put together Sunday School curriculum kit from Gateway Films for just $59.95. It is also available as an individual video.

This PBS style drama is an excellent learning experience and an invaluable mission resource to share Carey's passion for the unreached with a new generation.
