William Carey Library Publishers:

The Leading Discount Mission Book Seller

William Carey Library Publishers:

In 1969 William Carey Library Publishers and Distributors was founded for the exclusive purpose of providing at reasonable cost the best in current thinking on mission. It is the only company in the world that specializes on publishing and distributing only missions books, and at sizeable discount. The William Carey Library staff aim to aid the work of the mission executive, the missionary on the field and his home church, and the student of mission. Today we know of no other organization offering such a volume of quality works to assist in making missions more effective. In 22 years of serving the church in this way, WCL has distributed hundreds of thousands of mission books and aids. Material from 60 publishers has been sent to more than 75 countries on every continent except Antarctica. All this is done, in the grace of God, with three full-time and three part-time workers.

As a young Christian in the Navy, I once visited a missionary family in Vietnam. On a shelf I noticed stacks of printed material and was told they were gospel tracts in Vietnamese. I took some back to my ship and gave little rolled bundles of them to the boat people who came alongside.

I was deeply impressed one day when I saw a Vietnamese man and woman reading those tracts as they drifted by in their small boat, and I ralized the power of the printed page to communicate the gospel. In the 26 years since then, I have been involved in missions. I was a member of the staff of World Literature Crusade for a number of years. Ten years ago, I came to be the General Manager of the William Carey Library. It is a job I really enjoy, even though I constantly feel the need for more help.

Since WCL is a small publisher, I manage the business end, get manuscripts ready for publication, oversee their printing, marketing, etc. Whenever we have a student enrolled in our M.A. in Publishing Science program at the William Carey University, I also act as mentor to that student apprenticing under my supervision.

Mrs. Roberta Winter helps whenever necessary in the selection of manuscripts to publish, but my right-hand man, a member of the missionary staff of the USCWM, is Don Rodgers. His wife, Anne, also helps us part-time as receptionist and in customer service.

In 1980, while working with Campus Crusade for Christ, I took the Perspectives class. It was an eye-opener! A few months later I was headed for Guam and Japan.

After four years, God had firmly planted in my heart the desire to be involved in mobilization for mission. I knew of hundreds of soldiers (missionary candidates) willing to go to the front lines, but knew no one willing to stay home and send them the necessary supplies. I could see that the home base needed to be mobilized for the war, so I came to work with the U.S. Center.

I have served in many ways here, most recently organizing and managing the literature distribution. I see this as the most vital ministry God has given me to date. I view it like Paul Revere's historic ride in 1775: spreading the news (God's vision) and awakening the people to WAR! So now, 11 years after someone from William Carey Library sent me mission vision-building materials, I'm sending them to you. Maybe I'll see you here soon, helping us to mobilize others for war. Wouldn't you like to join staff and work with us?
